If you buy new and something were to happen, they're good about replacing stuff quickly, but either way I wouldn't worry about any reliability issues with the micro synths. You can purchase from Gear4music with complete confidence and peace of mind. I've never heard of any issues with them though, and I haven't had any myself. For a guitar though, headroom might not be as much of an issue (and it's not that bad on the XO anyway) and the new ones do have a little more top end to the filter and resonance to work with. If mine was part of a smaller set-up and was getting more live use, I'd probably go with the older version and mod the bypass. This can be an issue for recalling settings live, because eyeballing settings is not very feasible with the XO BMS, you really need to check it by ear because the difference between a slow sweep and a fast one can be about 1mm in some cases- This is not an issue with the older ones.ĭespite the relative short-comings of the XO Bass Micro Synth, I kept it and sold the big box a few weeks later, with the size and 9v power being a determining factor. With the slider in the middle, the filter sweep is almost at full speed whereas the older Macro's sliders where very sturdy and made linear adjustments. The XO sliders are very flimsy compared to the Macro, and the slider adjustments are not linear this is most evident on the 'rate' slider where 80% of the rate adjustment happens in the top 20% of the actual slider. You can dial is some higher frequency and higher pitched tones with the new XO bass micro synth. There is more resonance and a little more top end available on the XO BMS. The XO is true-bypass, 9v (not daisy chain-able), and from the factory tends to be a bit hot and distort on the lowest notes (with bass's at least) and the 'guitar' slider all the way up is well over unity- Therefor it is necessary to adjust the trimpot inside the case, EHX should have made it more easily accessible like the older ones. But, they come stock with a 3pdt switch and the true-bypass mod can be done with a soldering iron, no new parts necessary. The Macro's sound fatter- I've A/B'd the two, and the general consensus on talkbass from others who have owned both of them is the the older ones sound a little bit better. Probably due to the 24v power requirement, Macro's (macro=old big box)sound better and seem to have more headroom and they have a trim pot on the bottom- the XO has the trim pot inside the case. I had an older Bass Macro Synth and recently replaced it with an XO, they're both great pedals, and each has it's +'s and -'s. Otherdimensions - Many 'bass' pedals just don't cut lows like their 'guitar' couterparts and can be used with both and sound great. They all(old and new bass version, Ive never heard or used the guitar versions) sound good and very similar, though there's a slight difference between the original bass micro synth and the new XO. But I'll definitely either have it repaired or get a new one. The sound ingineer I know says it happens with MS. And 2 weeks ago I purchased a new complex power supply from the local guy. As for reliability - it worked fine for more than a year.
